๐ผ About This Role
You'll architect and productionize actuators for robots, owning topology selection, motor sizing, and transmission design. You will work cross-functionally with controls, mechanical, and firmware teams to ensure real-world performance under closed-loop control. This role stands out for its hands-on impact on shipping robots in a dynamic environment.
๐ฏ What You'll Do
- Design rotary and linear actuators for robotic joints and mobility systems.
- Select motors, gearboxes, bearings, sensors, and transmission elements.
- Build motor and gear ratio sizing models with duty cycle and thermal limits.
- Evaluate transmission types and justify tradeoffs for each application.
- Partner with controls engineers to meet bandwidth and torque-control requirements.
๐ Requirements
- 5+ years designing actuators for legged robots or dynamic systems.
- Deep understanding of transmission tradeoffs (harmonic, planetary, cycloidal, etc.).
- Ability to size motors and gear ratios from robot-level requirements with mathematical justification.
- Proficiency with CAD (CATIA, NX) and FEA for structural and thermal analysis.
โจ Nice to Have
- Experience with motor control and sensor integration (encoders, torque sensors).
- Familiarity with DFM/DFA and supplier engagement for manufacturing.
