💼 About This Role

You'll lead the Database Engineering team, owning the reliability, performance, and scalability of Postgres and AWS RDS systems powering Upstart's lending platform. You'll define the roadmap, mentor engineers, and partner with teams across the company to solve complex scaling challenges and enable developers to work more effectively with data.

🎯 What You'll Do

• Define the roadmap for database engineering to scale with company growth.
• Lead, mentor, and grow a team of Database Engineers.
• Partner with engineering teams to establish database design and query optimization standards.
• Drive automation and tooling to reduce operational overhead and improve observability.

📋 Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in CS, Engineering, Math, or related field (or equivalent)
• 8+ years of experience including 3+ years of direct people management
• Deep expertise in Postgres including extensions, performance tuning, and replication
• Experience with AWS (RDS, EC2, IAM, VPC, S3) and infrastructure automation

• Experience with Clickhouse, DataDog DBM, or other distributed database technologies
• Familiarity with database scalability solutions in cloud environments
• Background in financial services, fintech, or other regulated industries
