💼 About This Role
You'll lead the design, execution, and interpretation of experiments for the Vulcan fusion program aiming to demonstrate wall plug breakeven. You'll bridge physics, engineering, and systems integration to ensure diagnostic and facility requirements align with the Fusion Pilot Plant physics basis.
🎯 What You'll Do
- Develop Vulcan test plans for subsystem and integrated facility validation.
- Design, execute, and analyze experiments targeting critical physics risks.
- Write diagnostic requirements and coordinate with facility teams.
- Represent experimental physics in Vulcan facility planning and integration.
📋 Requirements
- Ph.D. in Physics with specialization in inertial confinement fusion or HED physics.
- Demonstrated experience designing and executing experiments on major HED facilities (OMEGA, NIF).
- Expertise in one or more diagnostic domains: x-ray imaging, neutron time-of-flight, charged particle spectrometry, VISAR, or optical backscatter.
- Must be a U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or lawfully admitted refugee/asylee.
✨ Nice to Have
- Experience leading multi-institutional experimental campaigns.
- Familiarity with target fabrication, layering, and injection constraints.
- Understanding of ignition metrics and performance scaling.
