You'll set technical direction on the hardest problems in Tempo, the open-source distributed tracing backend. You'll lead initiatives like trace aggregation APIs and autoscaling, pushing performance and operational excellence. This role offers a chance to shape the next generation of observability products at a remote-first, open-source company.

🎯 What You'll Do

• Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives from problem framing through rollout
• Own architecture of core Tempo components: ingestion, storage, query, metrics generation
• Design APIs for humans and agents
• Drive operational excellence against concrete SLOs

📋 Requirements

• Experience building and operating distributed systems at scale in production
• Proficiency in Go or a similar systems programming language
• Deep understanding of database internals (storage, indexing, query optimization)
• Track record of leading cross-team technical initiatives

✨ Nice to Have

• Experience with observability systems (tracing, metrics, logs)
• Contributions to open-source projects
• Experience with cloud-native technologies (Kubernetes, object storage)
