Description

You will assist in impact litigation and integrated advocacy to advance civil rights and liberties in New Jersey, working closely with a legal team on existing cases and policy analysis. This one-year fellowship is designed to develop core legal skills through hands-on experience.

Requirements

  • Strong understanding of and commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and racial justice.
  • Excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills.
  • Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills.
  • Strong time and project management skills, with high attention to detail.
  • Experience taking initiative and engaging in creative problem-solving.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
  • Previous experience in or connection to New Jersey public interest advocacy is a plus.
  • Must have graduated law school in 2025 or 2026 and seek admission to the New Jersey bar.

Responsibilities

  • Work closely with colleagues on existing litigation and advocacy projects spanning ACLU-NJ's priority issues.
  • Focus on developing core legal advocacy, legal research, and writing skills.
  • Analyze state and local legislative proposals, research legislative history, draft internal memos and testimony.
  • Draft or review advocacy or public education materials.
  • Conduct community outreach and represent ACLU-NJ in coalition meetings, conferences, and public speaking engagements.
  • Participate in meetings, activities, and tasks that advance the work of the legal team and organization.
