Description
You will assist in impact litigation and integrated advocacy to advance civil rights and liberties in New Jersey, working closely with a legal team on existing cases and policy analysis. This one-year fellowship is designed to develop core legal skills through hands-on experience.
Requirements
- Strong understanding of and commitment to civil liberties, civil rights, and racial justice.
- Excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills.
- Strong relationship-building and collaboration skills.
- Strong time and project management skills, with high attention to detail.
- Experience taking initiative and engaging in creative problem-solving.
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity and inclusion.
- Previous experience in or connection to New Jersey public interest advocacy is a plus.
- Must have graduated law school in 2025 or 2026 and seek admission to the New Jersey bar.
Responsibilities
- Work closely with colleagues on existing litigation and advocacy projects spanning ACLU-NJ's priority issues.
- Focus on developing core legal advocacy, legal research, and writing skills.
- Analyze state and local legislative proposals, research legislative history, draft internal memos and testimony.
- Draft or review advocacy or public education materials.
- Conduct community outreach and represent ACLU-NJ in coalition meetings, conferences, and public speaking engagements.
- Participate in meetings, activities, and tasks that advance the work of the legal team and organization.
