💼 About This Role

You'll set technical direction on Grafana Tempo, the open-source distributed tracing backend behind Grafana Cloud Traces. You'll drive multi-quarter initiatives like trace aggregation APIs and autoscaling cells. This role offers frontier AI coding assistant access and a remote-first culture.

🎯 What You'll Do

• Lead multi-quarter technical initiatives from problem framing through rollout.
• Own the architecture of core Tempo components: ingestion, storage, query, and metrics generation.
• Design APIs for humans and agents.
• Drive operational excellence against concrete SLOs.

📋 Requirements

• 10+ years of backend engineering experience.
• Expertise in distributed systems and large-scale databases.
• Proficiency in Go (or similar systems language).
• Experience with observability tools and tracing.

✨ Nice to Have

• Experience with open-source community contribution.
• Familiarity with AI/ML workflows and LLM integration.
• Background in cloud-native infrastructure (Kubernetes, AWS/GCP).
