Description
You will lead and supervise federal litigation focused on immigrants' rights and other civil liberties at the ACLU of New Jersey, working collaboratively with policy and communications teams to maximize impact.
Requirements
- At least eight years of litigation experience (including clerkships)
- Significant expertise in developing and litigating impact cases with at least five years of federal court experience
- At least two years of experience supervising lawyers
- Exceptional oral advocacy skills and ability to synthesize complex issues for diverse audiences
- Experience with creative problem-solving, taking initiative, and identifying opportunities to advance the law
- Strong understanding of and demonstrated commitment to racial justice
- Experience in affirmative civil rights and/or habeas litigation
- Admitted to practice law in New Jersey or ability to become licensed within 12 months
Responsibilities
- Investigate, develop, and litigate impact cases at all stages in federal and state courts
- Lead the legal team's federal litigation strategies across issue areas, with a focus on immigrants' rights
- Serve as a project manager for federal immigrants' rights litigation and work with department leaders on strategic decisions
- Work closely with Policy, Communications, and Development departments to promote change through legislative initiatives and public education
- Build and strengthen organizational relationships with allied organizations
- Supervise legal staff members, fellows, interns, and pro bono attorneys
- Contribute to a collaborative culture centering racial justice, inclusion, and participation
- Ensure compliance with ACLU-NJ policies and quality standards
