Description
As a Senior Materials Engineer at SpaceX, you'll develop and troubleshoot advanced material systems for Starlink satellites, from concept through high-volume production. You'll lead coating technology development, space environment testing, and root cause investigations to solve complex material challenges.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or related engineering discipline
- 5+ years professional experience in electronic materials, polymers, space survivable coatings, EEE packaging, RF-transparent materials, or joining technologies
- Willingness to travel up to 25% to other SpaceX sites or vendors
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs unassisted and stand/walk for long periods
- Willingness to work long hours and weekends as needed
Responsibilities
- Champion new thermal-optical, inorganic, and organic coating technologies for Starlink satellites from concept through production stabilization
- Apply coating science and deposition processes to develop high-performance surfaces for space applications
- Lead space environment testing including thermal vacuum cycling, atomic oxygen, radiation, UV exposure
- Conduct root cause investigations of material-related failures with hands-on laboratory testing
- Mentor peers on technical problem solving and engineering judgment
