You will provide expertise and research for Sotheby's Science Natural History department, focusing on high-care items like archives, manuscripts, and scientific instruments. You'll write catalogue entries, conduct provenance research, and assist in coordinating auctions to meet department financial targets.

Requirements

  • BA in History, History of Science, Biology, or related field; MA preferred
  • Knowledge and experience handling objects such as archives, manuscripts, scientific instruments, or fossils
  • Exceptional attention to detail and ability to synthesize complex materials for expert and non-expert audiences
  • Excellent writing skills and ability to work effectively in a team and individually
  • High level of computer literacy; familiarity with InDesign a bonus

Responsibilities

  • Research and write scholarly and commercial catalogue entries for Science Natural History property and Private Sale works
  • Prepare materials for selling works, including condition reports, selling points, and enhanced lot pages
  • Conduct extensive research using Sotheby's library and external resources, including provenance and due diligence
  • Catalog and research items for sales, ensuring high standards and meeting deadlines
  • Assist with exhibition set-up and marketing materials for auctions and private sales
