💼 About This Role
You'll architect and detail geared powertrains for robotic systems where conventional automotive solutions won't fit. You'll treat transmission architecture as a design variable and defend every choice on physical grounds. The role demands quantitative reasoning about tradeoffs like backlash vs. efficiency in millimeter-scale envelopes.
🎯 What You'll Do
- Evaluate geared, flexure-based, and hybrid transmission architectures against torque density and cost.
- Perform macro-geometry sizing: module, tooth counts, profile shift under tight diameter constraints.
- Design micro-geometry: tip relief, crowning, lead modifications for compliant housings.
- Run ISO/AGMA rating calculations with realistic robotics duty cycles.
- Partner with manufacturing on small-module processes: wire EDM, MIM, 5-axis grinding.
📋 Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on gear or transmission design experience.
- Production fluency with a gear analysis package: KISSsoft, Romax, or MASTA.
- Working fluency with ISO 6336 and AGMA 2001/2101.
- Experience releasing a transmission or geared subassembly into prototype or production.
✨ Nice to Have
- Experience with Loaded Tooth Contact Analysis for design decisions.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes for small modules (m < 0.5).
- Ability to derive tooth profiles from conjugate action principles.
